キュレーション／キュレーティングとは？

キュレーターというのはいろんな意味に使う。図書館の司書や博物館の学芸員みたいに管理的業務のイメージがあるかもしれない。

私はキュレーション、キュレエーティングというのは、「いくつものコンテンツをあるコンテクスト（文脈）のもとで３次元空間に配置することによって、新しい価値を生み出すこと」だと勝手に定義している。

図書館では本をある工夫された分類にもとづいて書架に配置し、知識を探索しやすくしているし、美術館や博物館などでは、個々の作品、展示品をどう配列するかで、美術館・博物館の値打ちが変わってくる。

美術館の場合、優れた作品のお陰で美術館の値打ちが上がるのではなく、優れたキュレーターによって配置されることで作品の値打ちが上がるのだとも言うそうだ。

コンテクスト（文脈）で分かりやすいのは歴史順に並べることであるが、テーマ別に並べたり、画風別に並べたり、そこは最初から計算できる場合もあれば、偶然によって思わぬ表現が生まれるかもしれない。予想・期待に応えることと、予想・期待を裏切ることを半々にするのが、芸術の黄金率だと私は思っている。

（自然をキュレーティングする）

前回はテクスチャの話が尻切れトンボになったが、ここでまたテクスの話が出てくる。

自然の地形と植生を仮想空間に表現する場合、

・まずは地形を適当に編集する。

・なだらかに見える地形でもその下には岩盤が褶曲し、切れ切れになって埋まっているかもしれない。（スナップショット参照）

後付けでいいので、適当に、しかもなにやら意味ありげに、つまりそれぞれの岩が実は地中では繋がっているかもしれない。そんなことも考えながら岩を埋める。

・植生はどうするか？　いろんな種類のものを植えたいか、シンプルに統一したいかは性格の違いが出るかもしれない。洋式庭園と日本庭園であれだけ違うのだから。ただ、ここでは自然を模すことにしよう。

植物園ではないので、自然のなかではやたらバラエティーがあるわけではない。ここでテクスのことを思い出そう。あまりにテクスの種類が増えると負荷の問題があるかもしれないがそれはさておき、何十種類もの植物が混在することはない。鉛直方向には木々の下に生える草、木陰の低木は明らかに種類が違うので、鉛直方向のバラエティは保持しよう。

でなければ、もともと植物にはテリトリーがあって、あるところには同じ種類のものが集団をなすが、別の植物のテリトリーときっちり線引きされるわけではなく、入り混じった場所があってもおかしくない。

ここである種類の植物オブジェクトを選んで配置することにしよう。これを何十も植えてもテクスは１枚である。代わりに、その植物オブジェクトは一本一本、サイズを変え、方向を変え、傾きを変え、間隔も変えて、何一つ規則的なものがないようにする。こういう方法でバラエティーをいくら増やしても、シムの負荷は増えない。

その際、地面から顔を出している岩との関係を意味ありげにするとよい。当然、岩の上には植物は生えにくいわけだから。そういう空白を存在させることが、植生をより自然らしく見せることになる。

海中では、じつは大部分の海底は砂地だそうだ。リップルマーク入りの砂地テクスを使うと流れの存在が感じられていいかもしれない。そこに意味ありげな配置で頭を出している岩に海藻やサンゴが根付く。砂地からサンゴや海藻が生えることはあまりなさそうだ。陸上とは反対ですね。あとは上と同じ。ちなみに、サンゴ礁と藻場はそれぞれ好みとする水温の違いから、あまり共存はしないかもしれないことに注意。

実のところ、こういう観点で海中の画像や動画を探しても、だいたいサンゴや海藻が密集しているところばかりが映像になっていて、なんにもない砂地だけの映像がアップされていることはない。そういう意味で自然らしいからしくないか議論できるのは仮想3D空間ならではのものと言える。
